Waxing Lyrical - Do you ever listen to the lyrics?

There is no denying that most, if not all, mainstream songs in the western world are in English. In fact, I know people who have even used songs to help them learn English.

But if a song called 'Oops... I did it again' can make it into the charts then that begs the question, do we really pay much attention to the lyrics nowadays? In French, for example, I would argue that the lyrics are often more important than the melody, although it must be said that this is not always a good thing (cough*Renaud*cough).

Waxing Lyrical is a personal project that explores the lyrics of various songs, from the beautifully romantic to the slightly creepy. What do you think? Do lyrics really matter or are they just one small element of what makes a hit a hit?
